Who should take an AST course?

Anyone who will be recreating in the backcountry should take an AST course. You don’t need any prior avalanche experience or training to take this course!

You can expect to learn how to identify avalanche terrain, trip planning basics, optimal use of tools and resources, appropriate travel techniques for avalanche terrain and more. A certified, experienced local guide will teach you the best practices to stay safe in the backcountry.

AST 101: What to Expect?

Most AST 1 courses in Canada offer one day inside learning (some in person, some online), and one day on the mountain with a certified ACMG (Association of Canadian Mountain Guides) guide.

In order to participate, you’ll need a desire to get out into the backcountry, a reasonable level of fitness, and the ability to travel via skis or splitboard. Be sure to check in with your guide for what equipment to bring. Generally you’ll need your own personal avalanche safety equipment (a shovel, probe, and transceiver) in addition to the means to hike up the hill on snow (snowshoes or splitboard for snowboarders, skins for skiiers).
